Lake Austin is one of the seven “Highland Lakes” located on the Lower Colorado River running through the City of Austin. Lake Austin is situated downstream from Lake Travis and upstream of Lady Bird Lake downtown and was the first large reservoir created in Texas. The lake’s close proximity to downtown makes it an ideal choice for an Austin boat rental.
Lake Austin is twenty one miles long and was formed after the completion of the Tom Miller Dam in 1949 following the failure of the two previous dams on the same site, both of which failed during instances of severe flooding. Lake Austin is used for flood protection, hydroelectric power generation, municipal water supply, fishing and other recreational activities. The miller dam is capable of generating up to 6750 kilowatts.
Before the Miller Dam was completed, Lake Austin had been known as McDonald Lake following the completion of the original dam in 1893. The second dam was finished in 1912 then washed away in a major flood in 1935.
The current Miller dam is about 1500 feet long and 85 feet high. Lake Austin has a storage capacity of about 25,000 acre-feet and a surface area of around 1900 acres. Lake Austin is home to some of the nation’s most exclusive real estate, some of Austin’s favorite waterfront restaurants as well as Austin’s most iconic landmarks.
